Course Description
This course gives pre-professional educators an understanding of reading as a process. It provides knowledge of language structure, function and cognition for the major components of reading. Further, it gives pre-professional educators an understanding of the principles of scientifically based reading research as the foundation of comprehensive instruction that synchronizes and scaffolds each of the major components of the reading process. This class also provides knowledge of effective research based instruction methodology to prevent reading difficulties and promote reading progress for PreK -12 grade students as well as struggling students including students with disabilities and students from diverse populations. A 20 hour guided field experience provides the future educator with the experience of observation and interaction with a school population. This course is infused with critical assignments and artifacts that enable the pre-professional teacher to accomplish specific ESOL performance standards and earn an ESOL endorsement upon successful completion of the ESE degree within the Teacher Education Program.

Methods of Instruction
This is a 3-credit hour course. Normally, a 3-credit hour course would meet two or three times each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 3 hours per week or 48 hours per term. I expect you to keep up with the weekly readings, discussion board postings, quizzes and assignments. Finally, I expect you to post discussion responses to questions posed on the discussion board to me and to your class mates. You should contact me via Desire to Learn (D2L) email to discuss any questions you may have on the material you are reading for this class. The teaching strategies will include discussions, collaborative learning, and Web-based teaching.
Course Schedule/Assignments
For D2L quizzes - Quizzes are available within each course lesson. They can also be accessed from the course menu page under the assessments tab on the top of the page. You will have two attempts to complete each 20 question quiz based on chapter readings. The highest score is the one that will count towards your final grade. Quizzes will close every Sunday by 11:55pm. Check the available/closing dates for each quiz on the calendar. Quizzes are worth 15% of your final grade. You will have 1 quiz per week from weeks 2-13. You will have 12 quizzes for the semester.
For D2L discussions - Each chapter will also have a required discussion assignment related to the content area of the lesson. Each week a copy of that required discussion is also posted under the discussion tab on the home page. Students will need to compose and post an original message and reply to at least TWO other student messages. A discussion post should not be more than two paragraphs in length and each paragraph should be 3-5 sentences in length. The discussion board for the lesson will close on Sundays at 11pm EST, so there will be NO late postings. Students must post to the chapter questions by Thursday of each week. The follow up reaction post must be posted by Sunday of each week. Check the available/closing dates for each discussion in the course schedule assignments or on the calendar. There is a discussion rubric to guide the writing of the discussion postings, please read this before your first discussion is due. Discussions are worth 15% of your final grade
For D2L exams -There will be two on-line exams, a midterm exam (week 7), and the final exam (week 14) both will open within D2L at 8:00 am and remain open until 11:55 pm. The exams will focus on textbook information. The format will be multiple-choice. Each exam should take approximately 1 hour. There will be no makeup exams. The exams are worth 20% of your final grade.
For D2L critical assignments - All Critical Assignments must be submitted through the D2L assignments box as an attachment to check for plagiarism. Remember if you are an Alternative Certification student, you do not have to upload in Livetext. These assignments correspond with the state mandated FEAPs (Florida Educator Accomplished Practices) and correspond with the textbook chapters. Each assignment has a specific due date in D2L. The critical assignments are worth 30% of your final grade.
For D2L activities/assignments- You will complete 5 activities throughout the semester. They are listed under the Assignments tab. Each assignment has an attachment that gives directions on what must be completed. The assignments must be typed in word and then uploaded as an attachment. These assignments are worth 20% of your final grade.
PLEASE NOTE ****
Students must receive a grade of C or above in each critical assignment and meet all FEAP indicators at the appropriate level in order to pass the class. If a critical assignment does not receive a grade of C or above or meet the FEAP indicators at the appropriate level, the course instructor will provide feedback to the student identifying the area(s) of the assignment that need revision. The assignment can be resubmitted once (by the deadline set by the instructor) and cannot receive a grade higher than a C.
If a submission is deemed “unacceptable” due to grammatical and/or spelling errors (meaning the assignment contains 10 or more errors), the assignment will be rejected by the instructor and the student will be required to seek outside assistance to improve his/her writing skills. Each campus has a writing lab and an online tool to assist students. The student will be permitted to resubmit the assignment once (by the deadline set by the instructor) and cannot receive a grade higher than a C.
In the event a student does not earn a grade of a C on a re-submission of a Critical Assignment or meet the FEAP indicators at the appropriate levels, a student must withdraw from the course (if before the final withdrawal date) or if beyond the withdrawal date the student will receive a grade of an F for the course and will be required to retake the course in a future term. The instructor will not withdraw students from the course. It is the student’s responsibility to adhere to the established college procedure and officially withdraw from the class by the official withdrawal date, if applicable. Failure to withdraw from the course by the established withdrawal date will result in an F for the course. Students will need to meet with their Teacher Education Specialist to revisit and revise their Educational Plan.
In the event of proven cheating or plagiarizing on any Critical Assignment, the student will receive an F for the assignment. Since the assignment must be met with a C or above in order to pass the course, the student will fail the course and be required to retake the course in a future term.
